My name is Javier Zabala, and for more than 25 years I illustrate books for children and adults, although lately I like to think that all of them are for people from one to one hundred years. I believe that where one can truly appreciate the essence of an artist is in his sketches, in his travel notebooks, even in his discardings, in his changes of opinion, in all that which is often hidden. We do all this work sometimes with a professional purpose, but many others just for the pleasure and the need to draw, also to grow. It is surely in these sketches, made without pressures or deadlines, with entire freedom, where you can see what we have not been, but also what we will be.
This book will have about 200 pages and will be edited with love and care. The first edition will be of 500 signed and personalized copies. It will be a selection of my preparatory sketches, illustrations finally not used, technical searches, graphic ideas... in the end, my work processes. Drawings which sleep in hundreds of boxes and drawers and nearly 60 travel notebooks that can now see the light.
Of my colleagues, I have always preferred their sketches. That´s why I'd like to edit this book, which I hope to be, almost, as if you were in my studio, browsing in the drawers.
The book will be easy to handle but large enough to be able to enjoy the images. Hardcover (16 x 21) and high quality paper.
What are we assigning your contributions?
All your contributions will cover the expenses of the layout, the prints, the edition of 500 copies of the book, signed and personalized, and the delivery costs. If we manage to overcome the objective, we will think about a second edition or the publication of a second travel book.
